๐Ÿ“ˆ Positive Drivers

  • Mining exports โ€” gold, platinum, coal
  • Strong trade links with China, EU, USA
  • Banking system โ€” one of Africa's strongest
  • Infrastructure investment push
  • Renewable energy expansion
  • Agriculture exports

โš ๏ธ Economic Pressures

  • Load shedding โ€” electricity instability
  • Low infrastructure growth
  • High unemployment (~32โ€“33%)
  • Weak consumer spending
  • Slow industrial output
  • Logistics & Transnet bottlenecks
  • High interest rates (borrowing cost)

๐Ÿ”ฎ GDP Outlook 2026 โ€“ 2030

Conservative

Growth stays 1 โ€“ 2%. Economy stable but slow. Unemployment remains high.

Reform Scenario

If electricity & logistics improve, growth could rise to 2.5 โ€“ 3.5%. Job creation increases, investment improves.

Risk Scenario

If infrastructure worsens, growth drops below 1%. Currency weakens further, investment slows.

Plain summary: A large but slow-moving economy with strong systems (banks, mining) but weak growth engines (jobs, infrastructure).

About SANUU

The South African National Unemployment Union (SANUU) is a grassroots movement born out of the urgent need to represent the millions of South Africans who face daily hardship due to unemployment. We are not a political party โ€” we are the organised voice of the people left behind by the economy.

SANUU advocates for policies that create sustainable jobs, fair social support, access to skills development, and the protection of workers' rights. We believe every South African deserves the dignity of work and the security of knowing their government is fighting for them.

Through community organising, public campaigns, and direct engagement with government and employers, SANUU is building a powerful movement that cannot be ignored. When we speak together, our voices carry the weight of millions.

Our Plan of Action

Economic Transformation & Industrialization Strategy

SANUU is advancing a practical, action-driven plan to tackle unemployment through targeted industrialization, infrastructure renewal, and inclusive economic participation. Our approach is not only about ideas โ€” but about clear implementation.

01

Township Industrialization Programme

SANUU will advocate for the establishment of Township Industrial Hubs in areas where the majority of Black South Africans live โ€” so economic activity happens where people live, reducing transport costs and increasing local employment.

  • Strategic land allocation โ€” work with municipalities to unlock unused or underutilized township land for industrial development.
  • Infrastructure investment โ€” push for government investment in roads, electricity, water, and internet connectivity.
  • Sector-focused hubs โ€” agro-processing, textile and clothing manufacturing, furniture production, and automotive repair and parts.
  • SMME support โ€” publicโ€“private funding, incubation programmes, and reduced regulatory barriers for startups.
02

Refurbishment of Old Industrial Areas

Many industrial zones across South Africa are underutilized or abandoned. SANUU will push for their revitalization into productive employment hubs โ€” especially for youth and semi-skilled workers.

  • Audit of old industrial sites โ€” identify inactive factories and degraded zones.
  • Publicโ€“private partnerships โ€” attract private investment to redevelop these areas.
  • Investor incentives โ€” tax relief for reopening factories and subsidies for companies that hire locally.
  • Facility modernization โ€” upgrade buildings with modern technology and improve safety and environmental standards.
03

Urban Renewal & City Revitalization

SANUU will advocate for the restoration and modernization of key economic cities such as Durban and Johannesburg, along with smaller towns โ€” creating a cycle of economic growth and job creation.

  • Infrastructure upgrades โ€” repair roads, public transport, utilities, waste management, and sanitation.
  • Inner-city economies โ€” convert abandoned buildings into business spaces and affordable housing; support informal traders with proper facilities.
  • Safety and governance โ€” strengthen collaboration with law enforcement for safe business environments.
  • Investor attraction โ€” promote cities as investment-friendly zones and partner with local and international investors.
04

Skills Development & Workforce Readiness

Industrialization must go hand-in-hand with skills development. SANUU will push for programmes that ensure communities are ready to participate in the new economy.

  • Technical training centres established in townships.
  • TVET partnerships for practical, industry-aligned skills training.
  • Apprenticeship programmes linked directly to industries.
  • Reskilling initiatives for unemployed adults re-entering the workforce.
05

Policy Advocacy & Partnerships

SANUU will play a central role in influencing policy and building partnerships that prioritize job creation and local industry.

  • Engage government at local, provincial, and national levels.
  • Collaborate with business chambers and investors.
  • Work with financial institutions to unlock funding.
  • Advocate for policies that prioritize job creation and local industry.
06

Monitoring, Accountability & Impact

To ensure real results, SANUU will keep the movement โ€” and its partners โ€” accountable to the communities it serves.

  • Track job creation numbers across programmes.
  • Monitor project implementation on the ground.
  • Publish progress reports on a regular basis.
  • Hold stakeholders accountable to their commitments.

Expected Outcomes

  • โ€บSignificantly reduce unemployment.
  • โ€บBuild self-sustaining township economies.
  • โ€บRevive South Africa's industrial capacity.
  • โ€บPromote inclusive economic growth.
  • โ€บRestore dignity and opportunity to communities.
